- Minoru Furuya’s Himizu Manga Gets Live-Action Film

18-year-old actor Shōta Sometani (live-action Uso-tsuki Mii-kun to Kowareta Maa-chan, Always: Sunset on Third Street ’64) will star in Shion Sono’s live-action film adaptation of Minoru Furuya’s Himizu psychological drama manga, and the film will open in Japan next spring. While Furuya is known for his gag manga Ike! Ina-chuu Takkyuubu (which inspired the Ping Pong Club comedy anime), Himizu is a far starker tale. Yūichi Sumida (Sometani) is a a third-year middle school boy who longs for a normal life, but a certain incident sets him on a descent into darkness. 16-year-old actress Fumi Nikaidō (Sono’s Gama no Abura)
- Manga Creator Moto Hagio to Teach at Joshibi U.

The Joshibi University of Art and Design has appointed modern shōjo manga pioneer Moto Hagio as a guest professor. Hagio will lecture under the Field of Media Art and Design in the Department of Cross-Disciplinary Art and Design. The Field of Media Art and Design aims to train creators in anime, character design, visual arts, and other areas. The university is a historical women’s institution of higher education with roots that date back over a century ago in the Tokyo area. - Kyoto Seika University Offers Japan’s 1st Manga Ph.D.

Kyoto Seika University announced on Tuesday that it will offer Japan’s first doctorate program in manga studies to new students, beginning in April of next year. The university in Kyoto has a 40-year history of academic study in manga and animation. The university was first to install a specialized area of manga studies in 2000, and it then created a Faculty of Manga in 2006. It was also the first to establish a master’s degree program in manga last year, when it accepted 20 students. The university notes that the creation of the doctorate program is a response to internationalization
